What do women do at the Shed?

We learn! We encourage! We create! We accept! We laugh!
Welcome to our shared space!
We are an inclusive group of diverse women who help each other to renovate furniture, build garden benches and plan ter boxes, mosaic, use tools, and machines…complete projects, and contemplate our next projects! There is laughter as we work on our projects and chat (as long as no-one is drilling or sawing!).
Women are welcome to come in and enjoy the company of other members over a cuppa or a quiet time in the library.
As the photos scroll on your screen, you will see items that members have made. There are native bee hotels, birds shaped from scrap wood that are excellent garden ornaments, garden benches, Adirondack chairs, coffee tables, renovated tables, and chairs. There’s a renovated and much-loved toy pram used by at least 2 generations of children. There are mosaiced pots, tables, and plant stands. The items in the photos have served to teach us many things!

Together we learn and build our confidence!
We learn how to safely operate and effectively use tools and machines such as:
  • Saws: hand saws, drop/miter saws, scroll saws, band saws
  • Sanders: hand sanding with sandpaper orbital sanders, palm sanders, belt sanders
  • Drills: electric hand drills, drill presses, drivers

We work together to learn how to choose:
  • Which drill bits for which job? …Countersunk or not?
  • How to join and cut timber…Dowell join? Glue? Screw? Both?…can never be too careful!
  • To clamp or not to clamp?.. That is an important question too!

We discuss and compare notes on how to plan and measure-up projects such as:
  • Building a coffee table
  • Restoring a garden table or garden bench
  • Making a pot plant stand to fit the pot!
